The media is full of negativity these days. The nature of news and the nature of human cognition have been observed to interact in a way that makes us feel frustration, pessimism and fear disproportionately. The relentless scare media distorts our view of the world through a bug psychologists call the availability heuristic.
This week, Pendleton want to hack that, and turn it around for you with a bit of positivity…
Some parts of our economic eco-system are thriving! The abrupt suspension of mass high-street shopping has created new buying behaviours and habits for consumers. As a result of this, there has been a reported 130% year-over-year growth in Western economies e-commerce orders as of April 21st and an impressive 146% growth in all online retail orders, leaving the e-commerce climate in the best position it has ever been.
After high-street reopened, e-commerce sales stabilised at a lower growth rate then they were, but the behavioural changes are already in full effect completely changing the retailing landscape over the years to come with the opportunity to adapt and move fast benefiting new and smaller businesses even more than established larger ones. And many small businesses like corner-shops have had massive 50-100% increases in turnover too as people shop local.
It has been reported that 19 million people in the UK have been forced to relocate their working environment to now operate from home. If you are one of these, now is a great time to show your appreciation to those around you and convince bosses and customers to move to a more flexible model long term. Allow this relocation to not seem like a negative but a blessing in disguise. Lockdown is affording you the opportunity to spend more time with your loved ones than ever! Do up your home, buy local produce, make the most of the instant commute, network with afternoon wine and in your pyjama bottoms if you wish! These are unusual times and if we embrace the change forced upon us to do business better and live better, we can allow human positivity to come to the fore.
Relish this time, kickstart new and old relationships, and seek the silver linings that this pandemic has created!
