Society needs Girls Who Code… and Coach!

Team Pendleton

Reshma Saujani, a lawyer-turned-activist, is on a mission to close the gender gap in tech and teach more girls how to code. Her non-profit organisation ‘Girls Who Code’ has helped around 90,000 girls to learn programming languages.

Saujani explains that the programmer stereotype of a “boy in a hoodie in a basement”, needs updating; and, that girls should be courageous and not fear failure. It has significant consequences… “Forty per cent of women are the primary breadwinners for their families and leaving women out of tech jobs means leaving families out of the middle class”.
Her efforts are paying off, too. Girls Who Code graduates are 15 times more likely than the national average to major in IT fields, and they play a vital role in encouraging other girls to pursue the same career path.

To show our appreciation for Saujani’s revolutionary work, we bring you her 5 top quotes on success and motivation in life!

“Embracing failure is the most important trait I’ve developed in my career.

I have tried to learn from my failures, and I believe it has made me stronger, more confident and more resilient.”

“Fail hard, fail fast, fail often. It’s the key to success!”

“If you haven’t failed yet, you haven’t tried anything.”

“We can’t think of any better way of becoming our best selves, than by finding something we’re great at!”

“Teach one girl how to code, she’ll teach four. The replication effect is so powerful.”
