Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, a cryptocurrency start-up in the United States, had long viewed the internet as a vehicle for reshaping the world.
For a long time though, he feared he was too late to the game; with others, such as Apple’s Steve Jobs and Intel’s Andy Grove, having led the internet revolution.
Armstrong’s timing, however, turned out to be ideal for a totally different revolution.
Armstrong explains that he was captivated by “the concept of a financial system that might limit the impact of middlemen and politicians”, from the moment he read a paper in 2009 about a new cryptocurrency named Bitcoin.
He was working as a software developer for Airbnb at the time, but, in 2012, he resigned and founded Coinbase, to make it easier for consumers to buy and store bitcoins.
Coinbase has since grown exponentially, to a point today where it holds 25 million client accounts, making it a viable rival to established banking institutions.
Armstrong remains adamant about taking the firm on to new and even greater heights.
He has adopted a collaborative leadership style, and he is always pushing his staff to approach him and discuss their ideas.
