Perfectionism

Rob Pendleton

A slight lapse of judgement can be costly for any business. That’s why attention to detail is a highly desirable trait for anyone chasing success. Detail-oriented people are more likely to notice a mistake and prevent it from causing catastrophic consequences.

This week’s story of Terry Gou exemplifies that…

Terry Gou had a rocky start before becoming one of Taiwan’s wealthiest men and the creator of Foxconn. He tried his hand at a variety of jobs till he was 24, ranging from labouring in a rubber factory and at a grinding wheel, to working in a pharmaceutical company. In 1974, he launched a business in a leased shed in Tucheng, a Taipei suburb, with ten elderly labourers creating plastic knobs for radios, using a $7,500 loan from his mother. Today, Foxconn is recognised for producing flawless components for companies such as Apple, Dell, Sony, IBM and Nokia, earning a reputation as a cost-effective, efficient, and dependable supplier.

Gou has risen to the top and carried Foxconn with him, thanks to a keen eye for detail and commitment to quality. As he diversified the into telecommunications and software development, his already quite grandiose aspirations, grew even more audacious.

To show our admiration for Gou’s and his growth story, we bring you some top quotes on his success and motivation in business,

“The group’s benefit is more important than your personal benefit.”

“I am not just bringing capital. I am bringing an entrepreneurial spirit. I am bringing a culture of sharing with employees.”

“I never think I am successful. If I am successful, then I should be retired.”

“Quality is easy to talk but hard to make.”

“Without peace, there’s no security… Without the economy, there’s no future. We need to think about the future for the youth.”
