Accept and embrace change

Rob Pendleton

This week’s subject teaches us not to sit and wait for perfect opportunities to present themselves. Find a passion and seize the initiative! Make your move. You have control over your decisions and can choose to wait or to pursue your goals. If things aren’t working for you, find something you are enthusiastic about and pursue a dream. Identify the areas of your life that you want excitement in and begin working on them today. Covid, has gifted many of us far more free time than we had previously, providing an excellent opportunity to learn new skills and improve. Take charge!

This brings us to this week’s story…

Harriet Mills was a single mother with a toddler, who did just that when she was made redundant from her sales job in 2010. Instead of panicking, she took a deep breath reflected on life while in a ‘paint-and-sip’ class. She discovered that group painting for enjoyment was a mostly unexplored field and really enjoyed the excursion with her friends. Wine & Design, her spin on the concept, now has around 80 franchise sites across the country, hosting a variety of events such as children’s parties and corporate get-togethers.

At Pendleton, we believe that you should constantly be seeking market whitespace to fill, since that is where your company can most readily succeed. If you’re wanting to start, pivot, or expand a business, opportunities may present themselves when you least expect them. Increase your awareness of the areas of your life that have room to grow. They may give you that extra boost in business too!

To show our respect to Mills’ transformational story, we bring you her top quotes surrounding success and motivation in business.

“Anyone that’s a mentor, business coach or life coach, who can show you the ropes and help you through things is a great asset for any business.”

“There is opportunity in the franchising industry because franchising itself is already a business-in-a-box. People want to work and they want to be creative, so franchising is a great way to get them on their feet right away.”

“Pay attention to your competitors—if someone is running a similar business, make sure you are doing it better.”

“I would tell myself to find a mentor right away. I found a great mentor last year, but we had already been in business for 10 years, so I just wish I found her sooner.”

“My husband inspires me. He’s an entrepreneur himself and has been a go-getter forever.”
