Entrepreneurial spirit and perseverance

Rob Pendleton

Starting and managing your own small business may be one of life’s most rewarding experiences. Don’t let your fear of failure prevent you from taking advantage of opportunities. You might not be able to overcome your dread. But, with enough triumphs under your belt, you’ll be able to manage it. Why not begin right now?

That brings us on to this weeks story of Kevin Plank…

He earned money selling flowers in college as well as an amalgamation of business loans, credit cards and other savings. Which allowed the newly graduated Plank to muster up the courage to launch his own business… operating out of his grandmother’s house!

After settling on the brand Under Armour, the Maryland native used his connections in the university football world to get crucial publicity for his product. However, it wasn’t until 1999, when Plank spent the entirety of the company’s budget on advertising in ESPN Magazine, that his fortunes began to turn. NFL clubs and athletes began purchasing Under Armour items in quantity as a result of the advertisement, resulting in a huge influx of sales.

Since then, the firm has expanded into new areas and established itself as a leading sportswear distributor to some of the world’s most prestigious sports teams. Plank is still the CEO, and he is in charge of a 20,000-strong team and $5 billion in yearly sales.

Under Armour’s success is a tribute to the value of perseverance and hard work. Kevin Plank and Under Armour have constantly inspired a new generation of aspiring entrepreneurs by their entrepreneurial spirit and perseverance.

For that reason, we bring you his 5 top quotes on success and motivation in life!

“Brand is not a product, that’s for sure; it’s not one item. It’s an idea, it’s a theory, it’s a meaning, it’s how you carry yourself. It’s aspirational, it’s inspirational.”

“Motivation, passion, and focus have to come from the top.”

“When you see most companies get big, they want to shout about all they’ve done. But the consumer wants to know: ‘What have you done for me lately?’”

“I’m a big advocate of the power of positive thinking, particularly for small businesses.”

“There’s an entrepreneur right now, scared to death, making excuses, saying, ‘It’s not the right time just yet.’ There’s no such thing as a good time. Get out of your garage and go take a chance, and start your business.”
